How to Apply for a Marriage License in Mower County, MN

In Minnesota, before you can legally get married, you must purchase a marriage license. The process begins online, and once the online portion is complete, both parties must appear in person at the Mower County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office with valid identification to finalize the application.

Please appear no later than 4:00pm as the process can take 15-30 minutes.  


Step-by-Step Instructions:

Complete the Application Online

Start by filling out your marriage license application at the Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS)

This step must be completed online before coming to our office.

Visit the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office

Once your application is submitted online:

Both applicants must be present

Bring a valid form of ID (state-issued ID, passport, consular ID, etc.)

Each applicant will sign the application and take an oath in person

Pay the License Fee

Standard fee: $125.00

Reduced fee: $50.00 (if eligible — see below)

Payment options: Cash, check (payable to Mower County), or credit/debit card (card processing fees apply)

Note: All application fees are non-refundable

Reduced License Fee Information

Couples who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education may qualify for a reduced fee of $50. To receive the discount, you must submit a signed, dated letter on official letterhead from your educator confirming the course completion.

Marriage Certificates

A marriage certificate is an official document that serves as legal proof a marriage has taken place. It is issued and filed by the county where the wedding occurred, typically after the marriage license has been signed and submitted. This certificate is an important record used for legal, personal, and administrative purposes.

How to Obtain a Copy of a Mower County Marriage Certificate

In person
  • Appear in person at the Mower County Auditor Treasurer Office at 201 1st St NE, Suite 7, Austin, MN 55912
Online
  • Go to the Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) webpage at https://moms.mn.gov/
  • On the left-hand side using the "Search for a Marriage Certificate" box, enter the male party’s information (if before 2013; if after 2013 you can use either parties' information)
  • If you have a common name, use the marriage date in BOTH the date range from and date range to (Ex: from 1/1/2025 to 1/1/2025) then select search
  • To the right of the search for marriage certificate box any matching records will appear. You may need to widen or narrow your search if nothing appears
  • If the first column under the county says "Mower", you may continue. If it shows another county name you need to reach out to that county to verify how to request a certified copy of your marriage certificate.
  • Select the green "Request a Copy" button to the right of the record 
  • Fill in requester information, quantity, payment method, (note you must call if you wish to pay by card), and delivery method then select the blue Next button when completed
  • Verify all information is correct and select finish
