Have You Gotten A Visit from your Appraiser?
Below is a partial list of some reasons you may receive a visit from your property appraiser.
- Quintile (Every 5 years): per state statute, our office is required to review each property in the county every 5 years. If the owner is not home, we may leave a card & complete an exterior review. Our quintile normally runs from May-September.
- Permit Reviews (November/January): we typically review permits twice a year - November & January.
- Tax Abatement Inspections for New Homes: as required under Mower County Abatement policy, appraisers will attempt to contact the owners during regular permit reviews. If this fails, we will contact those that require inspections.
- Boards of Appeal/Value Appeals (April–June): if a taxpayer is disputing their current value, they must appeal to their township board of appeal or the County Board if open book; A full inspect is normally required to appeal. If you are interested in making an appeal, please review your Valuation Notice & contact your appraiser prior to your board’s meeting date.
- Damaged/Destroyed Property: while we hope to not encounter them, accidents do happen. If a home or building is damaged or destroyed, homeowners are encouraged to notify our office. If we are not made aware of changes when a building is removed, we may be valuing a structure that is no longer there.
While in the field our appraisers will usually have on a reflective vest or coat & travel in Mower County-branded vehicles. We try to speak with the property owner when we arrive but if no one is home we may leave a card.
As always, with any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 507-437-9440.

About Our System
Mower County is set up under a “true county assessor” system which means all property assessments are conducted by the County. The County has a team of licensed appraisers who value, classify, and report all 21,300 parcels of property on an annual basis. That information is then used by the County’s experienced taxation team to determine taxes paid by each property. For more information on our process, click HERE.
