HEY - has anybody seen those 200’ long trucks hauling windmill blades through Mower County - what’s going on?
There is a “repower” project currently going on at the Grand Meadow Wind Farm, which is located just east of Dexter, MN and south of State Highway 16. This “repower” is one of several we will see in the coming months. On the Grand Meadow Wind Farm, the existing wind towers are being retrofitted with new longer and more efficient blades to produce more electricity. There are 67 towers in all; 201 blades. The power generated by the wind farm goes on the grid, thereby reducing the power demand from other conventional sources.
The Project is being undertaken by Northern States Power (XCEL Energy) and is well underway. At this time, all the new components are on site and the removal of the old blades will start next week. The “old” blades will be transported out of Mower County to a location in Missouri for reprocessing and/or recycling.
Mower County and the affected Townships have worked with XCEL Energy to develop and implement a road use agreement to ensure that access roads used for the project are restored to at least their previous condition. Mower County receives wind production tax revenue from these projects that helps to reduce the countywide tax levy.
Questions on the Project may be directed to Mike Hanson, Mower County Public Works Director at 507-437-7718.
